Review of a Nice P.A. for Small Ukulele Gigs
Since I started playing the Uke (only a couple of weeks, now), venues such as Coffee Houses and Small Classrooms have crossed my mind. Lugging around a large Sound Reinforcement with Roadies, like my old Guitar Playing Days, does not make sense with the Ukulele.
I asked this question on the Boards: “What type of Microphones/Pickups and Amplification do Y’all use for Ukulele?” Well, I decided to try some of my own Equipment and found a Sweet Solution.
A Diamond in the Rough. I have two AXL B60 (also known as Musicians Friend) Bass Amps that I currently use for Bass and Keyboards. These turn out to be the perfect system for a Uke Player and 2 Mikes.
They are relatively small in size and weight: 21”W x 24”H x 14 ½”D and 46 pounds in weight (about 21 Kilograms).
The Amp features 60 Watts RMS of Power, a 12” Woofer and a 2” Tweeter. This is a nice combo for both the Uke and Vocals. The 4-Band Equalization can be used to Notch out Feedback and compensate for Room Acoustics. I'm Pretty Sure the Neighbors Suffered through my Practice Session, as this Amp produces Ample Volume.
There are 2 Input Channels, with Independent Level Controls for each (I.E. - One to Mike the Uke/or Plug it in and Another to Mike Your Vocals. Each Input has Both a ¼” Jack and an XLR Jack.
If You live in the USA, these Amps are Only $99 Bucks! I’m using two Nady Starpower 1 Cardioid Mikes ($10 Bucks Each) that Reproduce Accurate Tone and Reject Feedback. These Items are available in the UK at a slightly higher price.
Note: Not for Carnegie Hall! LOL! Ric
