| The chicago festival was great and I had a great time meeting the new faces and the teaching...with three days of continued class learning worked well....Still stuck in Chicago though as these seeemingly unseen(weather looks fine to me) storms caused a huge bottleneck at O'hare with hundreds of flights late moved and cancelled....I quietly snuck out of the mess back to a hotel and will attempt to get out back in time for late lunch at Zippys tomorrow on a nonstop. The hotel i am staying at tonight gave me a room discount after I played on song for the manager on duty on the ukulele.....now thats a new benefit of the uke...Hotel room discounts for a song,,,,hmmmmmm hope to get pictures etc up soon.....Performances were great by all the artist... |

The WCUF was my 1st uke festival but it certainly won't be my last! I had a great time meeting everyone, learning a lot, and watching great players and entertainers! I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities and get to a uke festival. I'll have a smile on my face for days... now, Mike, about that cash discount... ;-)

Mike,
Sorry to hear you are stuck in the bad weather. Thanks to the Tiki gods that the weekend weather was beautiful and the rain waited until today. I know Spanky was also stuck. I am hoping he finally got out. Not sure about the Ali or Tonya either. Regardless, thanks again so much for coming. It was a pleasure to have you here with us in the midwest!

Windy City was a great experience! Mahalo to the organizers.
Lots of warm and friendly folks. Kanikapila was maika`i! The carved tiki in Tiki Terrace was an added treat for me.
I tried meet at least one workshop with each instructor. Think I missed Lil Rev's, one of my favorite people. I had to leave early Sunday so I missed the last performance ;-(.
Mike had some beautiful ukuleles on display. I was sorely tempted, but my money went for travel this year.
Hope there is a hana hou for 2009.
Later,
Joyce

Glad you made it home within a "reasonable" amount of time Spanky. I heard from Tim Sweeney - his flight was only delayed a few hours. I don't know about Tonya Dale or Ali Lexa and how they fared.
Fun time this past weekend, eh? As always, a blast hanging and playing with you.
George Klingelhofer and Terry Truhart put on a great weekend event(s). Everyone was smiling, laughing, singing and strumming. Good food, good drink, exotic location, wonderful new and old friends and ukes of all shapes and sizes.
George and Terry made planning and running a four day festival look easy - it's not. They pulled it off with style and grace.
Next year for sure!

Whew--I was lucky getting out (not that I'd want to *leave* the area after such a great time with all my new friends at the WCUF, but it *was* time to get back to work). Fortunately I was on the plane and we'd pulled back from the ramp at 7 am, just as the storm started. We stayed on the runway for 1.75 hours, watching the lightening hit everywhere around us (what a dark sky--we don't have those like that here except at night!). But we made it in the air and headed west.
About the festival--what can I say that hasn't been said already? It was such a great event that it's hard to believe it was Terry and George's "first time." In addition to the jaw-dropping performances and information-packed workshops, the feel of this festival (with the exception of Alan, the surly front desk clerk after hours) was outstanding. It was a real feeling of ukulele ohana--with a huge dollop of that fantastic midwest hospitality thrown in.
It was really enjoyable to teach so many eager beginner students; I admire the joy, enthusiasm and willingness to tackle something new that they bring to a festival. It was easy to teach a group like that!
I have dozens of photos to go through and some work to get done (the paying kind of work) then I'll post my account; I'll write here when I get my blog updated.
